
Field Hockey Home Opener Set for Sept. 5

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Orange field hockey team entertains Richmond in its first home game of the 2004 season on Sunday, Sept. 5, at 12 p.m. SU enters the contest with an 0-1 record after losing a hard-fought 4-3 overtime decision to Temple on Aug. 29. The Spiders are 1-0 after beating Monmouth, 12-0. Richmond plays Pacific at SU's Coyne Field on Friday, Sept. 3, before taking on the Orange Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse is beginning its 33rd season of varsity field hockey. In that time, the Orange owns an all-time record of 306-204-21.
This will mark the second meeting between Syracuse and Richmond. The Spiders own a 1-0 series advantage after defeating the Orange, 1-0 in penalty strokes, at the end of the 2002 season.
Syracuse head coach Kathleen Parker is in her 27th season in charge of the Orange field hockey program. She has guided SU to 284 victories, the nation's sixth-best win total among active NCAA Division I coaches. She is a four-time BIG EAST Coach of the Year and has led Syracuse to 14 of 15 appearances in the BIG EAST Tournament, along with three NCAA Tournament appearances (1993, 1995, 2001).
Senior midfielder Lindsay Peirson had a hand in all three Syracuse goals against Temple. She leads the team in scoring so far with four points (one goal, two assists).
