ITHACA, N.Y. – Jeff Evans’ (Springfield, Va.) goal in the 60th m inute propelled the Syracuse men’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory at Cornell on Wednesday, Sept. 8. The Orange improved to 1-2-0 on the season, while the Big Red is now 0-2-0.
Evans’ goal was his first of the season. With the score tied, 1-1, Evans took a pass from freshman Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.) and hammered it on net. The ball deflected off a Cornell defender and found the back of the goal for the game-winner. Collings’ assist was the first of his career. Evans has now scored five points in the last two games versus the Big Red.
The Orange took a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute on a tally by freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.). Rowley picked up the rebound off his own miss and put home his team-leading second goal of the season. The Big Red tied the game in the 23rd minute on a score from Nick Leonard. Brian Scruton and Pope Seye were credited with the assists.
Junior goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J.) earned his first win of the season, making four saves. It was Scheer’s first win since SU’s 4-0 win versus the Big Red last season. Cornell keeper David Mahoney made three saves in the losing effort.
Both Cornell and Syracuse had 10 shots in the game. The Big Red held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. The entire game was played in a driving rain.
Syracuse has now won three straight, and five of the last six, versus Cornell. The Orange reached the two-goal mark for the first time this season, giving the squad its fourth win in the last six outings when scoring at least twice. The victory also snapped the Orange’s losing streak in one-goal games at three.
Syracuse returns home for its BIG EAST opener on Saturday, Sept. 11 versus Boston College at 1 p.m. The Eagles are ranked eighth in the nation in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas Top 25.
