Orange Loses BIG EAST Opener to Boston College

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Eighth-ranked Boston College recorded its second consecutive shutout, defeating Syracuse in BIG EAST men’s soccer action at the SU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Orange is now 1-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play, while the Eagles improved to 3-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST.
Charlie Davies netted the game’s only goal in the 55th minute. Davies took a through ball played by Johann Helgason and touched it over the diving SU goalkeeper, Rich Scheer. The Eagles made the goal stand up and recorded the 1-0 victory.
The Orange had three chances to score within an 11-minute stretch in the second half. With 26 minutes left in the game, freshman Justin Van Houten appeared to tie the game, but the goal was disallowed because of offsides. Two minutes later, Alejandro Nuno put a header on net, but BC goalkeeper Issey Maholo was able to make a leaping save and bat the ball off the crossbar. With 15:10 remaining, freshman Isaac Collings put another shot on goal and hit the crossbar again.
Scheer made one save in the loss. Maholo’s only save of the game was on Nuno’s header. The Orange was outshot for the first time this season, 7-5. SU did have a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Syracuse was shut out for the first time this season. It is the Orange’s first shutout loss at home since a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Virginia Tech on Sept. 29, 2001.
The Orange begin a stretch of five consecutive road games when they travel to Oneonta on Tuesday, Sept. 14. SU’s next home game is Oct. 3 versus Georgetown. The Eagles return home to play Boston University on Wedensday, Sept. 15.
