SYRACUSE, NY -- Syracuse opens the BIG EAST Conference portion of its 2004-05 campaign with a January 5 matchup at Madison Square Garden against St. John’s.
The #6/7 Orange bring a modest six-game winning streak into the contest. SU’s 13-1 start equals the most pre-January wins in school history.
It will be the 76th meeting between Syracuse and St. John’s. The Johnnies are the sixth-most frequent SU foe in program history. The Orange own a 39-36 edge in the all-time series with St. John’s. In BIG EAST regular-season play, the margin is 24-18. Syracuse has won the last three meetings.
Wednesday will mark the first time the Orange have played against first-year Red Storm coach Norm Roberts. The hosts are 6-4 overall and have won three straight. St. John’s defeated #15/17 North Carolina State in the Holiday Classic on Thursday, 63-45. The Red Storm had a 27-10 halftime advantage after limiting the Wolfpack to 3-for-23 shooting (.130) in the first 20 minutes.
Sophomore guard Daryll Hill is St. John's top scorer (18.5 ppg.).
The Syracuse Office of Alumni Relations will be staffing an ORANGE FRIENDZY table outside the Play-by-Play restaurant, which is located within the Garden beginning at 5:30 p.m. until just before tip-off. Stop by to pick up a pom-pom and sticky orange for the game (while supplies last) and sign up for a chance to win a prize.
The game will be televised by ESPN Regional with Dave Sims and Jim Spanarkel broadcasting. It will be shown in the Syracuse area on Time Warner 26.
The Syracuse ISP Sports Network broadcast of the contest features Matt Park and former SU standout Gene Waldron. WAQX-FM (95.7) in Syracuse is home base for the network.
