Tennis Team Remains Strong in Doubles Play

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The women’s tennis team was able to pick up several doubles wins after struggling in singles play in day one at the Deacon Classic hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C.
In Flight A doubles action, the team of Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) remained undefeated on the season advancing to the semifinals. The duo won a tight match in the quarterfinals beating Rales/Stern of Virginia, 8-6. The pairing will face another UVA team in the semifinals Saturday afternoon. Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) and Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) also picked up a win in the Flight A doubles draw beating Grasu/Carter from Richmond, 8-3. The duo would get eliminated from the main draw by Wake Forest’s Poske/Simpson, 8-4.
In Flight B doubles, the team of Zeljka Juricek (Zagreb, Croatia) and Pearly Leung (Princeton, N.J.) lost in the quarterfinals, after receiving a first round bye, to Richmond’s Duran/Ziranovic, 8-3. SU’s Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) and Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Fl.) fell in the opening round, 8-3 to Tennessee Tech’s Carter/Ngiam.
In singles action, Vaynberg dropped her opening round match of the Flight A singles to Rachel Del Priore of Virginia, 6-4, 7-6. Zawadzki lost a tight first round match as well losing to Christine Dao of Rice, 7-5, 6-3.
In Flight B, Juricek won the first set of her first round match before dropping the next two losing, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Lipton advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinals with a 7-5, 6-3 win against Whitney Miles of Virginia. She will meet Virginia’s Lindsey Pereira in the quarterfinals. Bramante lost for the first time this season to Wake Forest’s Christine Simpson, 6-4, 6-2.
In the Flight C draw, Huignard advanced to the quarterfinals with a win against Virginia’s Lauren Dowling, 6-2, 7-6. Leong and Leung each lost their opening round matches in straight sets.
Play continues Saturday with the finals wrapping up on Sunday.
