The Syracuse football and men's basketball teams have combined for an 0-3 record in contests played in the Carrier Dome on October 15. In 1988, Van Halen performed in front of more than 19,000 fans.
The Orange football squad faced Penn State in front of a season-high crowd of 50,010 on this date in 1983. Kicker Don McAulay hit two field goals, including a career-long 51 yard attempt, to give SU a 6-0 lead. Back-to-back turnovers let the Nittany Lions back into the game, setting them up for one touchdown at the end of the third quarter and another as the final period began as Penn State went on to a 17-6 victory. Tony Romano recorded nine solo tackles and 10 assisted tackles for the Orange defense, while Bernard Kind added 11 solo tackles and four assisted tackles.
The Syracuse men's soccer team has lost both of its games played on this date in the Dome. In 1994, SU lost to Boston College, 2-0. The Orange also lost to No. 14 George Washington, 1-0, in 1989.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
