
Field Hockey Improves to 3-1 in the BIG EAST with Win at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Syracuse University field hockey team defeated Providence, 2-1, in BIG EAST Conference action at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The win improved the Orange's conference record to 3-1, giving it a great opportunity to participate in the four-team BIG EAST Conference Tournament at Rutgers on November 4.
Providence (5-10, 1-2 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Syracuse scored two unanswered goals in the second half to earn the victory.
Providence's Jessica Weinstein tallied the first goal of the game to give the Friars a 1-0 lead 21:20 into the game. The goal came off a penalty corner and was assisted by junior Melissa McGow. PC would hold the lead into halftime.
Syracuse (8-7, 3-1 BIG EAST) tied the game 1:25 into the second half as junior back Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley) connected on a direct shot off a penalty corner assisted by junior Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and senior Jessica Dahle (Farmington, Conn./Farmington) For Sola, it was her fifth goal of the season and fifth goal in SU's last five games. She has scored 12 goals during her Syracuse career.
Senior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 56th minute of play as she intercepted a pass in the Orange offensive end and went one-on-one with PC goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli. Sullivan chipped the ball into the upper left side of the cage, unassisted, for her ninth goal of the season (18th of her career). Sullivan is tied with junior forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) for most goals scored this season.
Scavelli had six saves for Providence, while freshman goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) earned the victory with four stops for Syracuse.
The Orange outshot the Friars, 14-10, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Providence College held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-6.
Syracuse now plays its last four games of the regular season at home, beginning with an Oct. 21st meeting with Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 23, the Orange hosts Connecticut at 1 p.m. Games against Cornell and Dartmouth the following week will also be played at SU's Coyne Field.
