Vaynberg, Orange Play on at Hampton Roads

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J.) will play in Sunday’s semifinal of the Flight A singles draw at the Hampton Roads Invitational in Newport News, Va. after picking up a pair of wins on Saturday. Other Orange going for titles on Sunday will be the doubles pairing of Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Zeljka Juricek (Zagreb, Croatia) who will face off against teammates Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif) and Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario) in an all-Syracuse final in the Flight D doubles draw.

Vaynberg won a pair of matches on Saturday beating Maricel Ballester of George Mason, 6-2, 6-1, before sneaking out a 7-5, 7-5 victory in the quarterfinals against Susan Pollack of Delaware.

In Flight B singles, Lipton was able to win her round of 16 match against Lauren Graham of James Madison in routine fashion, 6-1, 6-0. She would get eliminated in her quarterfinal match, however losing in a tiebreaker for the third to Kendell Swenson from George Washington.

In doubles play, Vaynberg and partner Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were ousted in the semifinals of Flight A by Cash/Zidek of William & Mary by a score of 8-5. In Flight B doubles, SU’s Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y.) and Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia) came up one match short of reaching the finals losing to Garder/Santos of Old Dominion, 8-4.

The Flight D doubles final will be decided by a pair of SU teams with the pairings of Vasilyeva/Juricek and Lipton/Huignard set to clash in Sunday’s final. It will be the second time this year that the two teams will face each other in the finals of an invitational after Lipton/Huignard defeated their teammates, 8-3, in the finals of the Flight B doubles draw at the Yale Invitational.

Play resumes Sunday with the finals wrapping-up in the afternoon.
