Orange Faces Pittsburgh Saturday On ESPN Regional

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange travels to Pittsburgh on Saturday, Oct. 22, to face the Panthers in a BIG EAST showdown. Senior free safety Anthony Smith anchors a secondary that is 15th in the nation in pass defense, allowing just 171.5 yards per game. Smith is tied for first in the country in passes defended per game with 1.83.
The game will be aired on ESPN Regional Television with Dave Sims and John Congemi calling the action. Kickoff is set for noon.
The defense is also ranked in other categories, including being tied for 12th in interceptions (10), tied for 17th in turnovers gained (15), 19th in third down conversion defense (30.9), and 38th in total defense (339.7).
“They’ve answered the bell a number of times when put to the challenge,” head coach Greg Robinson said of the SU defense. “That’s the sign of a good defense. They understand that that’s what their role is and that’s what their responsibility is. After a 1-4 start, Pittsburgh has defeated Cincinnati and South Florida, both at home, to earn a 2-1 BIG EAST record.
