New Britain, Conn., Oct. 21, 2005 – Senior Kelly Duan led a balanced SU attack with 11 kills as volleyball defeated Central Connecticut State, 3-0 (31-29, 30-18, 30-17), in non-conference action tonight. Senior Katie Allen recorded 11 total blocks for the third time this season.
Duan’s 11 kills was the match high. Senior Aila Dommestrup distributed 25 assists in the win. Senior Kristen Conway finished with nine kills. Allen and freshman Emily Kaier both added seven kills whle sophomore Joscie Kaup totaled 13 digs.
The two teams battled back and forth through game one, and Duan put down one of her kills to even the score at 17-17. The Blue Devils tallied the next point on a kill from Amanda Olmstead. A block by Chelsea Magee and Chantelle Bowden gave CCSU its biggest lead of the game at 22-19. The Blue Devils maintained a three-point advantage all the way to 28-25, until Allen recorded a kill to make the score 28-26. Dommestrup and Allen pushed SU within one with a block on a Bowden attack. Bowden came through on the next play with a kill to give CCSU game point at 29-27. A Brynn Good service error gave the Orange a point and the serve. Kaup stepped to the service line, and Brown deadlocked the game at 29-29 after an attack error. SU’s blocking came into full effect in the last two points, as sophomore Jen Malcom had a solo stuff on the next play, and then combined with Dommestrup for another block and the 31-29 victory.
In game two, SU jumped out to a 10-5 lead on the shoulders of a pair of Duan kills and a couple of Orange blocks. Syracuse would not lose that lead. Allen increased the lead to 19-13 with another kill. The Orange also scored the last six points of the game, thanks to a couple of CCSU miscues and two Duan and Allen blocks.
SU quickly took control of game three, 11-4, capped by an Allen kill. The Orange’s largest lead was 14 points at 25-11, and SU would roll to another 30-18 victory.
