SU Meets Rutgers in Final Road Contest of Regular Season

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Orange men’s soccer team will look to take another step toward securing a bid in the 2005 BIG EAST Championship when it plays its final road match of the year at Rutgers on Wednesday, Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m. Eight teams have already locked up spots in the championship, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Seton Hall, Connecticut, West Virginia, Notre Dame and Georgetown hav clinched spots in the Blue Division. South Florida, St. John’s and Cincinnati are guaranteed berths in the Red Division. SU is one of five clubs vying for the final three Red Division bids.
If the championship tournament began today, the Orange would get the final Red Division spot. SU knocked off Louisville 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 22 to earn three points in the league standings. The Orange is 2-0-1 in its last three outings and improved to 7-6-1 overall. It is 3-5-1 in the BIG EAST.
Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) netted the game-winning goal versus the Cardinals and also tallied his first career assist in the contest. For his performance, he was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this year. He leads the Orange in points (13) and goals (six).
SU’s rookies are stepping up for the stretch run. Spencer Schomaker (Seattle, Wash.) notched a goal and an assist last week. He scored the Orange’s first goal versus Louisville and assisted on classmate Eric Kleiman’s (Reading, Pa.) first career goal against Colgate on Oct. 18. Kleiman came off the bench against the Raiders and tallied three shots on goal.. He was rewarded for the performance with the first start of his career at Louisville. Freshman Robert Cavicchia (North York, Ontario) continued his solid play in goal last week. He made five saves to earn the win against the Cardinals and leads the league with 68 stops this year. Cavicchia owns the fourth-best goals-against average in the conference at 0.78.
Rutgers is currently in fourth place and can clinch a berth in conference tournament with a win. The Scarlet Knights are 4-4-1 in the league and 7-7-2 overall. They have won their last four games and have tallied at least three goals in each triumph.
Rutgers boasts the reigning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week in Adam Sternberger. Sternberger recorded three goals, including the game-winner against St. Peter’s. He had two scores against Red Division leader South Florida to lead the Scarlet Knights to a 3-0 triumph. Sternberger leads the squad with 16 points on the season, including six goals, four of which are game-winners.
Lubos Ancin has started eight games for the Scarlet Knights in net, while Matt Vanoekel has made seven starts. Vanokel has five of Rutgers’ seven victories, but Ancin leads the club in saves (39) and goals-against average (1.44).
The Orange own the series edge with Rutgers, 6-4-1. SU is 4-0-1 in the last five meetings with the Scarlet Knights, including a 3-2 overtime win in 2001 when Rutgers entered the match ranked #8 in the nation.
