The Carrier Dome has hosted just one event on October 27 in the past 25 years. The Orange football team defeated Army, 27-16, in 1984. Sophomore quarterback Mike Kmetz led was forced into action after both Don McPherson and Todd Norley were injured. He responded by directing Syracuse to 17 second-half points. Kmetz gained 42 yards on six carries.
Jamie Covington was the game’s leading rusher with 84 yards on 22 carries and two touchdowns. Scott Schwedes had three receptions for 91 yards, putting him nine catches shy of breaking Art Monk’s single season record of 41.
Outside linebacker Jamie Kimmel had nine solo tackles and two assists. He also blocked a punt to set up a field goal and was named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts. Army came into the game ranked second nationally in rushing, but the Syracuse defense held them to just 151 net yards on the ground.
