SU Downs Colgate in Men's Swimming, Women Come Up Short

HAMILTON, N.Y.-The Syracuse men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams squared off with Colgate Friday night in Hamilton, N.Y. The men won the first 11 events to pull away for a 148-88 victory, while the Colgate women snuck out a 121.5-120.5 win against the Orange.
Pat Mugavin came away with two first place finishes against the Raiders winning the 1000-free in a time of 9:58.28 before capturing the 500-free in a time of 4:47.28. Rob Persico came away with first place in the 200-free posting a time of 1:46.43 posting three splits times in the 26 second range.
In the 50-free, Ryan Caponera pulled away from the field winning in a time of 22.04. Peter Gollands won the 200-IM in a time of 1:57.75 before winning the 100-free in a time of 48.84. Robert Schelling won the 200-back in a time of 1:55.90, while Gustavo Araujo captured the 200-fly in a time of 1:57.20.
SU came away with the meets first race, the 400-medley relay, with the team of Persico, Luk Boral, Gollands and Caponera winning in a time of 3:31.42.
In diving action, Patrick White won the one meter diving with a score of 250.50, while Jeremy Thornton won the three meter diving with a score of 222.23.
On the women’s side, Lisa Wittich had the first SU win of the day taking first in the 1,000-free in a time of 10:28.32. She would take home two other first place finish winning the 500-free in a time of 5:09.63 to go along with winning the 400-free relay. She teamed with Melissa Clune, Petra Zavadilova and Sarah Manning to finish in a time of 3:39.33.
Vanessa Duenas won the 200-IM in a time of 2:08.89, while also placing first in the 200-fly with a time of 2:09.04. Catrina Roth posted a first place time of 2:07.26 in the 200-back.
In diving action, Victoria McKenna posted a score of 244.87 to win the one meter diving competition.
The Orange will next be in action Oct. 21-22 when it travels to West Point, N.Y. to take part in the Army Invitational.
