SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange football makes its first appearance in East Hartford, Conn. when it travels to Rentschler Field to take on Connecticut on Friday night at 8:00 p.m. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2, with Dave Pasch, Trevor Matich, and Rodney Gilmore calling the action, and Stacy Dales-Schuman reporting from the sidelines.
The Huskies enter the game at 3-1, beating Buffalo, Liberty, and Army. UConn’s lone loss came to a nationally-ranked Georgia Tech team, 28-13. The Huskies have yet to give up a point in their own confines in the last 182:51, and the UConn defense is currently the best in the nation (213.50).
“We have to win this game, absolutely,” head coach Greg Robinson said. “I didn’t go in there and tell them that this was a must win. This is the next step and we need to have success to achieve what we want to achieve.” Read all of Robinson’s Tuesday press conference here.
Senior Damien Rhodes is looking to become just the 17th player in SU history to eclipse the 2,000 yard rushing mark. He is just 24 yards away from reaching that milestone. Rhodes is also third in reception yards by a back with 552, trailing Floyd Little by 30 yards. He is currently 24th in the nation in rushing (101.2) and third in the BIG EAST.
The Orange's defense will look to match the Huskies, as it is tied for eighth in turnovers (12), 10th in turnover margin (+1.5), 36th in scoring defense (20.0), and 41st in total defense (347.5).
Senior Ryan LaCasse enters the game ranked fourth in the nation in sacks with 1.50, tied for 15th in tackles for a loss (1.75), and tied for 16th in forced fumbles (0.5). Senior Anthony Smith is tied for 10th in passes defended in the nation (1.5), while he and senior Steve Gregory are both tied for 22nd in interceptions (0.5).
