The Orange football squad has played three times and the men’s basketball team has hosted two exhibition games on this date in the Carrier Dome during the past 25 years. The football team has a 2-1 record in those games while the men’s basketball team is 1-1.
Two fourth-quarter touchdowns by James Mungro and two sacks by senior Dwight Freeney helped the Orange to a 24-13 victory against West Virginia in 2001. Freeney became the NCAA leader for sacks in a season with 16.5. Syracuse led, 10-6, after three quarters. Two big plays by the SU defense and special teams set up the game-clinching scores. Senior Andre Brinson blocked his second punt of the season. Two plays later, Mungro went into the end zone from two yards out for the first fourth-quarter score. On the next Mountaineer possession, Freeney forced his second fumble of the game. Senior Mark Holtzman made his first career fumble recovery to give the Orange a first down at the WVU 18-yard line. Mungro capped the three-play drive with a three-yard touchdown run.
In 1984, Syracuse guaranteed its first back-to-back winning seasons since 1967-68 with a 29-0 win against Navy. Harold Gayden rushed for 94 yards, and Mike Siano had four receptions for 80 yards to lead the Orange.
The football Orange’s lone defeat on this date in the Dome was a 26-24 loss to Tulane in 1990. Syracuse trailed, 20-6, heading into the fourth quarter. Quarterback Marvin Graves scored on a six-yard touchdown run and on the two-point conversion to bring SU to cut the lead to 20-14. Al Wooten then gave SU the lead with a touchdown with 7:03 left to play. Tulane came back however, and scored the game-winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in regulation.
The SU men’s basketball defeated Marathon, 99-94, in 1995. John Wallace scored 32 points and had nine rebounds, while Todd Burgan added 27 points, nine rebounds and three assists. In 1994, the Orange lost to California AAU, 84-82. Former UCLA star Charles O’Bannon made a layup with five seconds left in regulation to give the AAU team the win. Ryan Blackwell and Jason Hart led SU with 16 points each.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
