CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) had three top three finishes at the Nike Cup hosted by the Univeristy of North Carolina on Friday finishing second in the 400-individual medley and third in the 100-backstroke before teaming up to place second in the 800-freestyle relay. Competition in the three day event will conclude on Saturday.
Both the men and women are in fifth place after two days of competition. The men have accumulated 239 points, while the women have 293. Virginia Tech leads the men’s standings, while the Clemson women also find themselves in the lead.
Persico swam the 400-individual medley in a time of 3:56.92 to place second with Virginia Tech’s Gus Calado winning the race with a time of 3:53.63. Persico finished the 100-backstroke in a time of 49.96, just six tenths of a second behind second place finisher Joel Johnson of Clemson.
In the 800-freestyle relay, Persico swam the first leg with Wes Matson (Wichita, Kan.), Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) and Luke Boral (Poznan Poland) following to finish the race in a time 6:43.15.
Boral placed third in the 100-breaststoke with a time of 55.36.
Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) continued her impressive season, finishing fourth in the 400-individual medley in a time of 4:31.92.
In the 100-butterfly, Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) and Melissa Clune (Bainbridge Island, Wash.) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Zavadilova turned in a time of 56.36, while Clune finished the race in 56.71.
Competition concludes on Saturday with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and the finals in the nightcap at 6 p.m.
