SU Swim Teams Lose at the Wire to West Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- The men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each lost tightly contested meets to West Virginia on Saturday at the Webster Pool with the Orange losing the men’s competition, 124-111, while the women lost, 124-119. Both duals came down to the final relays of the day to decide the outcome. Junior Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland) broke his own Webster Pool record for the second time this season as he posted a time of 2:02.54 in the 200-breaststroke.
Boral finished first in the 200-breast with his record setting performance. Earlier in the day, he finished first in the 200-freestyle with a time of 1:43.60. Rob Persico (Fulton, Md.) was close behind Boral in the 200-free finishing in second in a time of 1:44.08. Persico went on to win the 200-backstroke with senior Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M.) finishing in a close second (1:53.84).
Senior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y.) posted two first place performances against the Mountaineers, winning the 1,000-free (9:41.58) and the 500-free (4:40.22). Senior Gustavo Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished second in the 200-butterfly (1:55.12), while freshman Matt Gerlach (Franklin Square, N.Y.) came in third in the 1,000-free (9:51.72).
In relay action, the Orange got a second place finish in the 400-medley relay from the team of Persico, Boral, freshman Peter Gollands (Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior Ryan Caponera (Latham, N.Y.) who finished the race in a time of 3:28.13.
Sophomore Patrick White (Poulsbo, Wash.) finished first on both the one and three-meter diving boards. He posted BIG EAST qualifying scores in both events.
Sophomore Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla.) upped her already impressive list of first place finishes this season as she won both the 200-fly (2:04.61) and the 200-individual medley (2:08.37) to give her 13 first place finishes for the year. Senior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo.) chipped in with two first place finishes of her own as she was victorious in the 1,000-free (10:25.59) and the 500-free (5:05.92).
In the 200-back, freshman Catrina Roth (Aurora, Ill.) pulled away to finish first, winning by almost a full second as she finished in a time of 2:07.31. Junior Randi Beaulieu (Mississaugua, Ontario) posted a time of 24.87 in the 50-free to earn a second place finish. Sophomore Erin Homewood (Williamsburg, Va.) took third in the 1,000-free, while freshman Sarah Manning (Syracuse, N.Y.) came in third in the 200-free.
In relay action, SU received a first place finish to start the day in the 400-medley relay from the team of Roth, sophomore Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla.), junior Petra Zavadilova (Olomovc, Czech Republic) and Beaulieu.
Sophomore Tory McKenna (Westford, Mass.) took first on both the one and three-meter boards. With her performance, she has earned a second consecutive trip to the NCAA Zone Qualifying meet.
With the losses, the men drop to 1-2 (0-2 BIG EAST), while the women are now 0-3 (0-2 BIG EAST). The Orange will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 21, as it travels to take on BIG EAST foe Connecticut.
