SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Fans will get the first look at the 2005-06 edition of the SU women’s basketball team when it hosts Bishop’s University in an exhibition on tilt on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1:00 p.m. in Manley Field House. Admission and parking for the game is free.
The Orange return five letterwinners from a team that went 13-16 last season. Sophomores Mary Joe Riley (Inkster, Mich.), Amanda Adamson (Littleton, Colo.), Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania), junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) and senior Jill Norton (Marlton, N.J.) are back. Redshirt freshman Sara Antolick (Bethlehem, Pa.) also returns after missing the majority of last season with an injury.
Antolick started all six games she played in and Harbut, Adamson, and Sipaviciute each started at least 12 games in 2004-05. Sipaviciute and Antolick are SU’s top returning scorers at 7.7 and 7.3 points per game, respectively. Antolick also grabbed 7.7 boards per game in her six contests, and Sipaviciute led the conference in blocked shots with 64, the most rejections since Bonnie Baker swatted 62 shots in 1985-86.
New to the mix are five freshmen Cintia Johnson (Syracuse, N.Y.), Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.), Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.), Lina Lisnere (Riga, Latvia), Keri Laimbeer (Orchard Lake, Mich.) and one junior college transfer in the form of Ashley McMillen (Penfield, N.Y.). Smith, Laimbeer and Lisnere are all at least 6-2 and will add depth to SU’s front line. Johnson and Eckhart will handle the point guard duties and McMillen guided Monroe County Community College in Rochester to two NJCAA national championships and set the school record with 182 three-point field goals.
Bishop’s, located in Lennoxville, Quebec has already played seven preseason games and owns a record of 3-4. The Lady Gaiters are coming off a 73-51 win versus Saint Mary’s. Reigning conference MVP Anouk Boulanger netted 22 points in the victory.
The game marks the first of five appearances in Manley Field House for the Orange this year, including the 2005-06 home opener versus Sacred Heart on Nov. 27. Ten of SU’s 13 regular-season home dates will played in the team’s new home – the Carrier Dome.
