Tommy Harris and Diamond Ferri stuffed the Pittsburgh rushing attempt on fourth-and-one in the second overtime period to give the Orange football squad a 38-31 victory on November 6, 2004. The win improved Syracuse’s all-time record in the Dome on this date to 3-1.
Collin Barber’s field goal with 5:03 remaining in regulation tied the score, 24-24. Pittsburgh had the first possession in overtime and scored a touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Tyler Palko to Joe DelSardo. The Orange responded to force a second overtime session when Perry Patterson recorded his first career touchdown run, a three-yard run on an option play. SU scored the game-winning touchdown on its second OT possession. Damien Rhodes accounted for all 25 yards on the drive and capped it with a two-yard run for a touchdown. Rhodes rushed for 103 yards on 23 carries. Walter Reyes, playing in his final home game, ran for 123 yards and a touchdown.
In 1999, Syracuse won its final game played in the millennium, defeating Temple, 27-10. After SU took a 20-10 lead on Nate Trout’s second field goal of the game, Latroy Oliver intercepted a pass on Temple’s next possession and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown to secure the win.
The Orange also faced Temple in the Dome in 1993. Quarterback Marvin Graves rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more, including an 84-yard strike to Shelby Hill, to lead Syracuse to a 52-3 victory. Graves finished the game 11-for-18 passing for 224 yards, while Hill had four receptions for 110 yards. The SU defensive unit caused five turnovers.
The Orange’s lone loss in the Dome on this date came in 1982. The Midshipmen of Navy defeated SU, 20-18, in front of a season-high crowd of 43,443.
More than 23.5 million people have passed through the revolving doors of the Carrier Dome since the building’s first public event on September 20, 1980. Throughout the 2005-06 SU athletics seasons the University will celebrate the first 25 years of the Loud House.
In the first 25 years of the Dome, more than 1,740 events were staged, including collegiate, professional and high school athletics events, University commencement, concerts, a circus, and community events. These activities are chronicled in the more than 100 photographs that are currently in the concourse of the Dome. Fans who attend events in the Dome can re-live the memories with these photos.
