Harbut Leads SU To 81-76 Win Against UMass In Return To The Dome

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) recorded 19 points, two off of her career best, and dished out a personal-high 12 assists to lead the Orange to an 81-76 win against Massachusetts today, Dec. 10, in SU’s first appearance in the Carrier Dome since 1992.
Harbut is the first player since Julie McBride in 2002 to pull off a double-double in points and assists. McBride had 10 points and 10 helpers against San Francisco on Jan. 2.
Junior Ashley McMillen (Penfield, N.Y.) drained five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 16 points on 5-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc, both personal highs. Sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) eclipsed the 20-point mark for the seventh-straight contest with a game-high 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
SU improved its all-time Dome record to 13-3 with the win. Against UMass in the Loud House, the Orange is now 2-1, winning the last two clashes. The Minutewomen won the first-ever women’s Dome game in 1981, 70-66 in overtime.
Sipaviciute started the scoring two minutes into the game when she layed in her first bucket. The teams were deadlocked, 6-6, five minutes into the game, but the Orange went on an 11-4 run over the next five minutes to take a 17-10 lead with 10:10 remaining in the first half. Sipaviciute had six points while Harbut added four in that span. The Minutewomen fought back with a 6-0 run of their own to pull within one, 17-16. SU responded immediately with a 7-2 spurt to extend its lead to 24-18 with six minutes to play in the first half. UMass took its first lead, 33-32, with 1:20 left to play in the frame with an 8-2 scoring stretch. UMass owned a 38-34 halftime lead after Katie Nelson hit a half-court shot as time expired.
In the second half, Ashley McMillen nailed a 3-pointer three minutes into the period to tie the game, 43-43. Later in the half, the Orange went on an 8-2 run to take a 55-52 lead with 12:15 left in the game. Kate Mills notched the next eight points for the Minutewomen to help UMass regain the lead, 60-57, with 9:26 left. The Orange went on a decisive 15-4 run over the next six minutes to seal the win. UMass made a late rally, a 10-2 scoring streak that closed the gap to two points, 76-74, with 26 seconds left. Freshman Jenny Eckhart (Libertyville, Ill.) and Harbut sealed the win by each hitting a pair of free throws in the waning seconds.
For UMass (2-7), Mills scored 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the floor. Pam Rosanio added 19 points, while Tamara Tatham, Whitney McDonald, and Nelson each contributed 10 points. Tatham and McDonald hauled in eight and seven boards, respectively.
