SAN ANTONIO, Dec. 14, 2005 – For the second-straight season, senior Kelly Duan has been selected to the AVCA All-America Honorable Mention squad. Duan had a stellar senior campaign as she broke the single-season kills mark with 537. She was also a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST First Team for the second-consecutive year.
Duan averaged 4.26 kills per game and was just off of Dana Fiume’s record of 4.27 in 1999. Her 1,217 attacks in 2005 is the third most in a single season, and she is just the third student-athlete to eclipse the 1,200 attacks mark in a season. Her 57 service aces this season is the fifth highest total in a year.
For her career, Duan finished fifth on the all-time kills list with 1,360, while her 3,373 career attacks ranks sixth on the all-time ledger. Duan totaled 175 career service aces with a 0.38 per game average, which both rank third all-time. Her 1,091 digs is sixth at SU in a career. Duan racked up 290 block assists in her four years, which puts her in sixth in that category, while her 325 total blocks is also sixth.
Three BIG EAST performers were named to the second team. BIG EAST Player of the Year Lena Ustymenko and Jennifer Hoffman from Louisville were both named to the second team, while Notre Dame’s Lauren Brewster also made the list.
Among the other BIG EAST Honorable Mention honorees were Lauren Kelbley and Adrianna Stasiuk from Notre Dame, Jesse Nevitt from Cincinnati, Megan McGrane from Pittsburgh, and Ana Yartseva from Louisville.
Duan is just the third student-athlete in Orange volleyball history to earn regional honors. Sherry Cowling garnered first team accolades in 1988 and 1989, while Terri Hibner earned second team honors in 1989.
