SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University men’s lacrosse team was picked fifth in the two most recognizable, national preseason polls in college lacrosse. Lacrosse Magazine had the Orange fifth behind Duke, Johns Hopkins, Virginia and Maryland, while Inside Lacrosse and Face-Off Yearbook ranked SU fifth behind the same four schools, just in a different order. The Lacrosse Magazine staff compiled its 2006 preseason rankings via consultations with coaches and members of the media, while Inside Lacrosse and Face-Off Yearbook surveyed 55 NCAA Division I coaches, the largest sampling for any Division I poll.
Inside Lacrosse and Face-Off Yearbook also released its preseason All-America lists and six Orange players appeared on the four teams. Senior midfielder Greg Rommel, a second-team All-America in 2005, was selected to the 2006 preseason first team. Senior attackman Brian Crockett and junior defenseman Steve Panarelli were chosen to the preseason second team, while sophomore attackman Mike Leveille was selected to the third team. Earning preseason honorable mention accolades were senior attackmen Brett Bucktooth and Joe Yevoli.
The Orange has set its 2006 goals upon improving its 7-6 record from 2005 and returning to its status as a national-championship contender.
