Orange Loses To Pittsburgh, 67-55, In BIG EAST Opener

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Sophomore Vaida Sipaviciute (Kaunas, Lithuania) scored a game-high 22 points as the Orange lost to Pittsburgh, 67-55, today, Dec. 8 at the Petersen Events Center. It was the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
Sipaviciute shot 9-of-17 from the field and pulled down six rebounds. Redshirt freshman Sara Antolick (Bethlehem, Pa.) recorded 10 points and nine boards for the second-straight game in her first start of the 2005-06 campaign. Junior Tracy Harbut (Lexington, Ky.) dished out six assists for the third-consecutive game while adding nine points in 40 minutes of play. Freshman Brittany Smith (Milwaukee, Wisc.) made her collegiate debut tonight, scoring four points and adding four rebounds in 13 minutes of play.
Pitt jumped out to a 21-4 lead six and a half minutes into the game and never looked back. The Panthers pushed the lead to 33-13 on a lay up by Vika Sholokhova with 6:16 left in the half. Pitt went on to lead at halftime with the same cushion, 43-23.
Pitt continued to roll in the second half and pushed its lead to 24 with 8:27 remaining in the game, 61-37. SU did not let up, and went on an 18-4 run in the waning minutes of the game to threaten within 10, 65-55. The Panthers kept the Orange at bay, however, and came away with a 67-55 triumph.
For Pittsburgh (7-2, 1-0 BIG EAST), Mallorie Winn scored a team-high 17 points while Marcedes Walker chipped in with 16 points and nine boards. Cheron Taylor collected 10 rebounds for the Panthers in the win.
SU (4-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) is back in action on Saturday, Dec. 10, when it hosts Massachusetts in the Carrier Dome at 1:00 p.m. The game will have streaming live video on All Access found on the athletics website, suathletics.com. To find out more, click here.
