Syracuse Loses to Two Ivy League Foes During the Weekend

The Syracuse tennis team (7-3, 3-0) lost two matches to Ivy League foes during the weekend. The Orange lost to Princeton, 5-2, on Friday, February 25 and then was defeated, 4-3, by Cornell on Sunday, February 27.
In the Princeton match, Syracuse won the doubles point with its top two doubles teams both capturing wins. Freshmen duo Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki defeated Stephanie Berg and Jessica Siebel, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. Junior Wei-Ming Leong and sophomore Katie Bramante won at the No. 2 spot, 9-8 (4), against Darcy Robertson and Joanna Roth.
Sophomore Ashley Lipton had the only victory in singles for the Orange. Lipton defeated Christine Kansky, 6-4, 1-6,6-4.
Against Cornell, the excellent play in doubles against gave Syracuse the early advantage. SU captured win at all three doubles positions. Zawadzki and Vayberg won, 8-5, against Kokubo and Edinson at the No. 1 position. Leong and Bramante defeated Melissa Tu and Takeuchi, 8-2, at the No. 2 spot, while Lipton and Carolina Huignard won at the No. 3 position, 9-7, versus Maloy and Preneta.
The Orange also had victories at the top two singles spots. Vaynberg and Zawadzki both captured wins in a three-set match. Vaynberg defeated Kokubo, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, while Zawadzki won at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, against Edinson.
Syracuse plays its final match before a spring break trip to California on Friday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m. at Army.
