Queens, NY - The Syracuse University women's tennis team (2-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) defeated BIG EAST rival St. John’s, 4-3 on Friday afternoon at the Alley Pond Tennis Center. After over four and a half hours of tennis, the match came down to a third set tiebreaker at No. 3 singles between Ashley Lipton and Kristina Bothova of St. John’s, in which Lipton held on for the 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (3) clincher.

The Orange began the day by sweeping the three doubles matches, taking the first point of the match.

In singles action, Syracuse had victories at No. 1, where Victoria Vaynberg knocked off Hande Gorur, 6-4, 6-2, and at No. 4, as Carolina Huignard defeated Lauren Lorenzetti, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

St. John’s evened the match with wins at the No. 2, 5 and 6 positions to pull even at 3-3, setting up the importance of the No. 3 singles match.

The Orange returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Amherst, MA to take on the University of Massachusetts at 12:30 p.m.
