PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse second baseman Shawna Norris has been named the BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week for helping the Orange to a 4-0 record at the George Mason Patriot Classic. It is the second time in three weeks that a Syracuse player has won a weekly award from the conference.
Norris batted .417 (5-for-12) with three home runs and five RBI during Syracuse’s unbeaten weekend. Four of her five hits went for extra bases as she totaled a 1.250 slugging percentage. She also posted a .462 on-base percentage.
In the Orange’s 10-2 victory against Cornell on March 6, Norris tied the school record with two home runs. She is the fifth SU player to register a multi-home run game.
For the season, Norris is the team leader in batting average (.370), home runs (3), slugging percentage (.741) and on-base percentage (.452). She has started all 10 games at second base.
Norris joins teammate Courtney Mosch as BIG EAST award winners this season. Mosch was the league’s pitcher of the week on Feb. 21.
Syracuse is off to its best start in school history with an 8-2 record. The Orange has reeled off a school-record seven consecutive wins and has been receiving votes in both national polls for three straight weeks.
The Orange begins its spring break trip to California with a doubleheader versus Cal State Northridge on Saturday, March 12. Syracuse will play at least nine games on its week-long trip, including a minimum of five games in the Kia Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
