FAIRFAX, Va. – Sophomore Courtney Mosch threw her first career no-hitter in a 2-0 win versus Cornell (1-1) at the Patriot Classic hosted by George Mason University. The Orange defeated the host Patriots (3-9), 12-4 in five innings, in the second game of the day. SU has won five straight games and is now 6-2 on the season.
Not only was it Mosch’s first no-hitter, it was also the first seven-inning no-hitter in SU history. Tara DiMaggio threw a five-inning no-hitter in a 9-0 win versus Buffalo on April 14, 2000. Mosch (4-2) allowed only one base runner on a walk and struck out six. It was also the Orange’s first shut out of the season.
Freshman Erin Downey was the winning pitcher against George Mason. Downey (2-0) threw four and one-third innings of relief without allowing a hit. She allowed one unearned run and struck out a career-high 10.
SU had several players contribute on offense led by junior Cassie Morales’ four hits on the day. Morales also drove in SU’s first run against the Big Red. Senior Tanya Rose had three hits, three runs scored and one RBI, while freshman Erin Gray went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in against George Mason.
Against Cornell, junior Alexis Switenko had two hits in three at-bats and senior Shawna Norris hit her first home run in an SU uniform.
Senior Jaime Grillo had two runs batted in against George Mason on her first career home run. Rookie Chanel Roehner, SU’s leading hitter entering the weekend, had two hits and three runs batted in versus George Mason. Mosch also contributed at the plate versus GMU with a hit, two runs and an RBI.
Saturday’s first game versus Cornell remained scoreless until the home half of the fifth inning. Rose led off with a single, went to second on a ground ball and then scored on a single by Morales. Norris padded the lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run. That was all the offense the Orange needed as Mosch retired the last 18 batters she faced.
The Orange had to play from behind in the day’s second game against George Mason. The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Downey came on in relief with two outs in the inning, replacing freshman Alex Austin, who was making her first career appearance.
SU got one of the runs back in the second on an RBI double by Gray, but the Patriots extended their lead to 4-1 in the second when they scored an unearned run on a fielder’s choice.
George Mason wouldn’t score for the rest of the game as the Orange reeled off 11 unanswered runs. SU got one in the third on an RBI double by Roehner and tied the game in the fourth when Grillo hit a two-run home run.
SU, aided by three Patriot errors, scored eight runs in the fifth inning. Mosch and Roehner each had run-scoring doubles, while Gray and Rose drove in runs with singles. SU scored two runs on GMU errors.
Syracuse is just one win away from equaling the longest winning streak in school history. The Orange will face the same two teams again on Sunday.
