Orange Defeated, 15-7, by #1 Virginia

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The #12 Syracuse women’s lacrosse team (2-1) suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of #1 Virginia (1-0), 15-7, at the Carrier Dome on Saturday, March 5. Senior Monica Joines led the Orange with two goals and one assist against the Cavaliers.
Joines moved into fifth on the SU career points ledger with 116 points (95 goals and 21 assists). Carrie Soults holds the fourth position with 133 points.
The Orange’s offense was unable to break through the Virginia defense, not taking a single free position shot, and Cavalier goal keeper Ginger Miles stopped 10 of SU’s 15 shots. Senior Caitlyn Dragon and sophomore Gaddy Fortune each scored two goals for the Orange, and sophomore Jill DePetris had the other goal for Syracuse.
Cary Chasney won the opening draw for the Cavaliers and Kim Connors scored the opening goal just 12 seconds into the contest. Virginia scored its second goal at the 12:59 mark taking a 2-0 advantage early.
The Orange got on the scoreboard 19:06 into the game when Joines scored her first goal, and Fortune scored the equalizer 48 seconds later, tying the contest, 2-2. The Cavaliers then erupted for six goals in a five-minute span to break open the game.
The Cavaliers won the following draw, their eighth consecutive, but SU gained possession and Joines scored her second goal of the game 1:17 before the break to make the halftime score 8-3.
SU won the opening draw of the second half, but a turnover allowed Cary Chasney to score. The Orange was able to answer two minutes later when Gaddy Fortune scored her second goal of the game. The Cavaliers scored the next four goals to take a 13-4 lead.
The Orange then rattled off three goals in a span of 4:30 to pull within 13-7 with Caitlyn Dragon sandwiching a pair of goals around a Jill Depetris marker.
Leachman would score her fourth and fifth goal of the game, giving the Cavaliers a 15-7 victory.
Junior Jennifer Kasel made a season-high 11 saves for the Orange.
The Orange continues the 2005 campaign with its first road game against BIG EAST rival #5 Georgetown on Saturday, March 12 at 1:00 p.m.
