Orange Softball Splits Doubleheader At Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Courtney Mosch threw a four-hit shutout, while Shawna Norris belted a two-run home run to lead the Syracuse softball team to a 5-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader at Seton Hall on Sunday, April 10. Seton Hall won the first game, 1-0. The Orange has won six of its last nine games and stands at 16-12 overall and 4-2 in the BIG EAST. The Pirates are now 19-10 overall and 6-2 in the league.
Mosch earned her second shutout of the season to even her record at 7-7. She scattered four hits, striking out eight and walking four. It was her first no-run game since tossing a no-hitter versus Cornell on March 5.
The Syracuse offense hit three home runs in the second game. Norris put the Orange on the board with a two-run home run in the fourth inning. She went 3-for-4 in game two. Tanya Rose had three hits in the twin bill, including her third home run of the season, a solo shot in the seventh inning of game two. Alexis Switenko had two hits on the day, including a two-run blast to left in the seventh inning of the nightcap.
Katie Kaempfer had two hits game. Cassie Morales had a base hit in each game, while Tiffany Robinson contributed a single in game two.
Megan Meyer (14-4) was the pitcher of record for the Pirates in both games. She won game one, tossing a three-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk. She gave up two runs on five hits in three and two-thirds innings in the game two loss.
Erin Downey (8-5) was the loser for SU in game one, snapping her four-game winning streak. Downey allowed one unearned run on six hits, striking out five.
Seton Hall scored game one’s only run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kate DePaul reached with one out on an error. Anne Leone sacrificed pinch runner Danielle Steinseifzer to second base and Katie Pierce delivered a two-out double, her second of the game, to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates threatened to take control of game two in the bottom of the third inning by loading the bases with two infield singles and an error, but Mosch shut the door sitting down back-to-back hitters on called third strikes.
The Orange offense finally solved Meyer in the fourth inning of game two. Mosch singled through the left side and Norris followed with her team-leading fourth home run of the season.
SHU threatened in the sixth inning, putting runners on first and second with one out, but Norris snared a line drive and flipped to Melissa Kelly at first for an inning-ending double play, the Orange’s second of the game.
SU played long ball in the seventh. Rose started things, belting a long home run over the center-field fence to make the score 3-0. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Switenko launched her third home run of the season to make it 5-0 Orange.
Syracuse will continue its stretch of six consecutive BIG EAST games with a home doubleheader versus Providence on Tuesday, April 12 at 12 p.m. The games are a make-up of a doubleheader that was washed out on April 3.
