PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Syracuse senior Shawna Norris was named the BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week for her efforts in helping the Orange to a 4-2 record, including a 3-1 league mark.
Norris led the team with a .500 batting average (7-for-14), a home run, five runs batted in, a .786 slugging percentage and a .611 on-base percentage. In the Orange’s 5-1 win at St. John’s she drove had two of her three RBI on a first-inning double that scored what proved to be the game-winning runs. She finished the game with three hits in three at-bats. In game two at Seton Hall, Norris launched a home run to give SU a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of its 5-0 win. Norris’ homer came off Megan Meyer, this week’s BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week. She finished the game with three hits in four at-bats.
For the season, Norris leads the team with four home runs and a .393 on-base percentage. She is second on the squad with a .471 slugging percentage and is third on the team with 13 runs batted in.
It is the second time that Norris has been named the league’s player of the week (March 10). She is just the second player in school history to win the award twice in one season.
Syracuse has won six of its last nine games to improve to 16-12 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play. The Orange has a chance to tie for the league lead on Tuesday, April 12 when it hosts Providence at 12 p.m. SU is currently two wins behind BIG EAST leader Seton Hall.
