
Tennis Earns Third-Seed at BIG EAST Championships

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse University women’s tennis team will compete in the 2005 BIG EAST Championship as the third seed, April 21-April 23, in Tampa, Fla. Syracuse enters this year’s tournament with an 12-7 overall record and a 5-1 mark in the BIG EAST. SU’s first opponent will be sixth-seeded Seton Hall. If the Orange get by the Pirates, it is scheduled to play second-seeded Boston College on Friday, April 22 at 12:00 p.m.
The top half of the bracket includes No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 4 St. John's and No. 5 West Virginia.
Earlier this season, Syracuse defeated Seton Hall, 5-2. SU won the doubles point with victories at the top-two positions. Freshman Victoria Vaynberg and Catherine Zawadzki defeated Viviana Figueroa and Iva Gyurgina, 8-4, at the No. 1 position, while junior Wei-Ming Leong and sophomore Katie Bramante won, 8-3, against Jennifer Seide and Nadja Sein in the No. 2 spot. The Orange quickly took a 3-0 advantage as Leong, playing in the sixth singles spot, defeated Gyurgina, 6-1, 6-1, and Vaynberg had a 6-3, 6-2, win against Figueroa in the No. 1 position. Zawadzki, playing in the No. 2 position, captured the win for the Orange as she defeated Ebru Burduroglu, 6-4, 6-2. Bramante completed the match with a 6-4, 7-5, win against Catalina Isaza at the No. 5 position.
Syracuse and Seton Hall square off on Thursday, April 21, at 12:00 p.m., in Tampa.
