SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The 13th-ranked Orange (9-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) looks to win its third straight BIG EAST match on Friday, April 22 when it plays host to BIG EAST rival Rutgers (4-7, 1-3 BIG EAST) at 4:00 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.
SU last defeated Boston College on Saturday, April 16, 11-4, and has won four of its last five games. SU’s only three losses this season have come against teams ranked in the top 10 of the latest IWLCA poll. SU suffered back-to-back losses to No. 4 Virginia and No. 8 Georgetown before stringing together a six-game winning streak that was snapped by No. 4 Dartmouth last week.
Rutgers has lost four of its last five games, its only win coming against Villanova, 15-3. In its most recent outing, the Scarlet Knights were beaten by No. 18 Connecticut, 11-5. Rutgers’ one BIG EAST victory this season was an overtime win against Boston College, 11-10.
The Scarlet Knights are averaging 9.71 goals per game and have cracked the 10-goal mark just five times this season. Katie Batiuk is the team’s leading scorer. She has tallied 33 goals and nine assists for 42 points. Batiuk ranks third in the BIG EAST in points. Kate Shomo is second on the team in goals with 15, while Lindsay Rising leads the team in assists with 10. Jamie Farewell leads the team in ground balls, collecting 32 ground balls, the third most in the league. Anne Marchitello is fifth in the league in caused turnovers, forcing 19 takeaways.

The Syracuse-Rutgers Series
Syracuse and Rutgers have met each season since the Orange women’s lacrosse program began in 1998. Syracuse has scored double-digit goals in each pairing and have scored at least 10 goals in three of those matchups. The Orange owns a 4-3 advantage in the overall series record, including winning the last two contests in 2003 and 2004.
Last season against the Scarlet Knights, Jen Kasel made a career-high 23 saves in Syracuse’s, 15-5, triumph versus Rutgers at Yurcak Field. Kasel faced 36 total shots against Rutgers. The performance ranked second on SU’s single-game saves list, two short of Clothilde Ewing’s school-record 25 stops against Connecticut in 1999.
The SU defense held the Scarlet Knights scoreless for a span 26:16 during and contest and outscored them 11-0 in that stretch to take control of the game. Syracuse trailed Rutgers, 2-1, at 9:54 when Leigh-Ann Zimmer found the back of the cage on a pass from Melody Agnew to tie the game, 2-2, at 12:07. The goal ignited the Syracuse offense, which scored the game’s next 10 goals to give the Orange a 12-2 advantage at 36:49. Rutgers halted the SU scoring streak on a goal by Cristina Curiale with 21:37 left to play. The Orange recorded the game’s next three tallies to make the score 15-3 at 50:16. Rutgers’ Emily Widrick tacked on two late goals to provide the final margin.
Meghan O’Connell finished with three goals on four shots, while Monica Joines contributed four points (three goals, one assist) for the Orange.
