BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season, defeating Canisius in game one, 4-1, and losing game two, 6-3 in nine innings. The Orange is now 27-16 overall, while the Golden Griffins improved to 13-15.

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season, defeating Canisius in game one, 4-1, and losing game two, 6-3 in nine innings. The Orange is now 27-16 overall, while the Golden Griffins improved to 13-15.
The Golden Griffins won the nightcap in the bottom of the ninth. Jenny Maheu led off with a single to center field and moved to third when the Orange defense misplayed the sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners on the corners with no one out. Beth Enk ended the game with a three-run home run to right field.
Senior Tanya Rose led the SU offense with five hits in the doubleheader, including three doubles. She also drove in two runs. Freshman Chanel Roehner added two hits and an RBI in game one.
Senior Tiffany Robinson recorded one hit in game one and two in game two to extend her hitting streak to 13 games, tying the school record set by Rose last season. Sophomore Courtney Mosch homered and drove in two runs. Sophomore Erin Gray had a hit in each game to run her career-best hitting streak to seven games.
Freshman Erin Downey won her third straight start in game one. She allowed one run on seven hits, striking out six and walking one. Downey (16-7) was the loser in relief in game two. She gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on four hits. She struck out six and walked two. Mosch started game two, allowing three runs, all unearned, on two hits. She struck out seven and walked four.
Syracuse scored in the top of the first inning of the opener. Roehner singled with one out and moved all the way around on three wild pitches to make the score 1-0.
The Orange made it 4-0 in the second inning with three runs on five hits. Rose drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single to left, and Roehner drove in the third run of the inning with her second hit of the contest.
The Golden Griffins got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Jessica Martin delivered a two-out single make the score 4-1.
Canisius broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two with three runs. After Mosch struck out the first two batters, an error and two walks loaded the bases for Enk who delivered a single to drive in the first run. Martin was then hit by a pitch to make it 2-0 Golden Griffins. Ashley Gonnello plated the third run of the inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
The Orange drew within one run in the top of the sixth. Switenko started the inning with a single and scored on Mosch’s sixth home run of the season.
Syracuse tied the game in the top of the seventh. Rose led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by Roehner and scored on Cassie Morales’ sacrifice fly.
SU outhit the Golden Griffins in game two, 10-6, but stranded 10 runners, including six in scoring position. The Orange is now 2-3 in extra-inning games this season.
