SYRACUSE, NY -- Junior Chris Muldoon (Robesonia, Pa./Conrad Weisner HS), a member of the cross country and track & field teams, has been selected to participate in the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference, May 29-June 2 at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. A total of 324 student-athletes from Division I, II and III national Student-Athlete Advisory Committees were picked from 1,166 nominations.
Muldoon, an advertising major, led the Orange cross country team last fall. He tallied a 26th-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship and an 18th-place finish at the IC4A Championship. Muldoon was a member of the SU relay team which broke a 17-year old record in the distance medley relay during the 2004-05 indoor track season. Muldoon also competed at the Armory Collegiate Invitational at the New Balance Track and Field Center in New York City on Feb. 4. Muldoon competed in the Championship 3K race and finished 22 out of 40 collegiate athletes with a time of 8:18.72.
Syracuse student-athletes who have participated in the NCAA Leadership Conference previously include: Craig Forth, basketball, 2004; Spencer Raymond, swimming, 2003; Tim Adrian, track & field, 2002; Kyle Johnson, football, 1998.
The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day leadership conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group.
The conference is an outreach of the successful CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Many of the student-athletes who participate are members of their conference and campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committees (SAACs) . Each NCAA member institution that has a CHAMPS/Life Skills program is encouraged to nominate student-athletes from their campus for the annual leadership conference. Todd Wyant, Syracuse's Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Services, coordinates the CHAMPS/Life Skills program at the University.
