HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Freshman Erin Downey recorded her first career shutout, striking out 10 batters in the Orange softball team’s 8-0 victory in game two of a doubleheader at Hofstra on Tuesday, April 5. The Pride won the first game, 3-0. SU is now 13-11, while the Pride stands at 20-12.
Downey’s 10 strikeouts were just one shy of her career high and her third double-digit effort of the season. She improved to 6-4 on the season, scattering four hits and walked two.
SU’s Courtney Mosch (6-7) was the loser in the first game, allowing three runs, two of them earned, on four hits. She tied her career high with eight strikeouts and walked three. Callie Osborne (11-5) was the winner for the Pride with her fourth complete-game shout out of the season. She allowed four hits, struck out four and walked four.
Hofstra’s Adrienne Clark (6-6) took the loss in the nightcap, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work. Courtney Oliver allowed four runs and struck out six in two innings.
Mosch led the offense with two singles in the opener. Alexis Switenko and Tiffany Robinson each had infield singles.
In game two, Switenko was the offensive star with two hits and three runs batted in. Chanel Roehner went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs. Erin Gray belted her first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth. Jaime Grillo notched two hits and scored twice. Robinson had two hits and two RBI to extend her hitting streak to a season-high three games. Cassie Morales and Jennifer Elderbroom each had hits.
Hofstra’s Lisa Wambold started the scoring in the opener in the bottom of the first inning when she took a 3-2 change-up over the left-field fence to give the Pride a 1-0 lead. Hofstra extended its lead to 2-0 in the third inning when Wambold drew a two-out walk, stole second and scored on the Orange’s first error of the game. The Pride pushed the lead to 3-0 in the sixth when Ashley Lane put the first pitch of the inning over the fence in right-center field.
Syracuse left runners in scoring position three times in the game. In the second inning, a walk and hit batter put runners on first and second with one out, but Hofstra third baseman Tara Ulrich made two good defensive plays to end the inning. She snared a hard line drive off the bat of Gray and then made a diving play on a ground ball down the line by Katie Kaempfer. The Orange loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a single in the fourth, but Osborne induced a ground ball back to the circle and started the inning-ending double play. In the sixth, back-to-back singles by Switenko and Mosch put two on with two out, but a strikeout stifled the rally.
In the opening games of its three doubleheaders this season, the Syracuse offense has been limited to no runs on 11 hits.
The Orange offense came to life in the first inning of the second game. A leadoff walk by Rose and a single by Morales put runners on the corners with one out. Switenko gave SU a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to deep center field.
Syracuse made it 3-0 in the top of the second inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases when Roehner delivered a two-RBI single that took a wicked hop off the Hofstra second baseman.
The Orange plated four runs in the sixth. Gray started the rally by going deep to left for her first homer of the season. SU put runners on first and third without hitting a ball out of the infield. Grillo reached after a wild pitch on strike three and moved around to third when Elderbroom reached on an infield single and the Hofstra third baseman’s attempt at first was wild. Robinson drove in the run when she hit a ball off the second baseman’s foot that ricocheted into short right field. Roehner was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Switenko delivered a two-RBI single to left to make the score 7-0.
The Orange finished the scoring in the top of the seventh. Robinson did the honors with a line drive single to center field that scored Gray.
SU’s eight runs were the first scored against the Pride in three games at the Hofstra Softball Stadium.
Syracuse gets back into conference play on Saturday, April 9 with a doubleheader at St. John’s. SU also will play a road doubleheader at Seton Hall on April 10.
