Chris Liwski, a 2002 graduate of Syracuse University and former captain of the Orange crew team, rowed in the five-seat of the victorious Oxford Blue Boat at the 151st annual “Boat Race” challenge between Oxford and Cambridge Universities on Sunday, March 27 on the River Thames in London. The Boat Race is one of the major annual rowing events in the United Kingdom.
Oxford's heavyweight crew powered its way to a two-length victory against Cambridge in the third-fastest time in University Boat Race history. Oxford’s time of 16 minutes 42 seconds was 23 seconds outside the record set by the Light Blues in 1998.
Liwski is currently on leave from the SU College of Law to pursue to masters degree in water science, policy and management at Oxford.
Liwski has already experienced international competition. He was a member of the U.S. men's eight that won a championship at the 2002 Nation's Cup. He helped the U.S. men's eight to a championship at the 2003 Pan-American Games, and he was selected to the U.S. men's eight at the World Under-23 Regatta. This past summer, Liwski was an alternate for the US eight at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
