SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Former Orange tight end Roland Williams returns to the team that drafted him in 1998, the St. Louis Rams. Williams is one of five former Orange to change teams this off-season, the others are: Thump Belton, Morlon Greenwood, Tebucky Jones and Rob Konrad.
Williams was drafted by the Rams in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, where he spent three seasons, and was a member of the 1999 Super Bowl champion team. After the 2000 season, Williams signed with Oakland where he remained for two years before joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a season on injured reserve in Tampa Bay, Williams returned to the Raiders for the 2004 season. During his seven-year career Williams has 111 catches for 983 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Other former Orange on the move in the NFL include linebacker Morlon Greenwood. Greenwood, who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the third round of the 2001 NFL Draft, signed as a free agent with the Houston Texans. During his five-year career, Greenwood has had 298 tackles, including 182 solo. Fullback Rob Konrad also departed the Dolphins and signed with the Oakland Raiders. For his six-year NFL career, Konrad has 114 rushing yards and 854 receiving yards. Defensive back Tebucky Jones signed with the Miami Dolphins following two years with the New Orleans Saints. Jones has 307 tackles and six interceptions in his eight NFL seasons. The Chicago Bears signed 2004 graduate Thump Belton who spent last season on the Detroit Lions’ practice squad.
The Orange continue to be a strong presence in the NFL. In 2004 former SU quarterback, Donovan McNabb led the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl. Last season, McNabb passed for 3875 yards and completed 64% of his passes. McNabb ranks fourth on the NFL’s all-time touchdown to interception ratio list and has posted more playoff wins than any quarterback in Eagles’ history.
Last season former Orange defensive lineman, Dwight Freeney led the NFL with 16 sacks. During his three-year career, Freeney has forced 17 fumbles and recorded 40 sacks.
