
SU's Two Late Goals Seals 11-9 Victory For The Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The No. 17 Syracuse women's lacrosse team scored two goals in the final six minutes, including the game-winner, as the Orange defeated future BIG EAST rival Loyola, 11-9, on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The Orange is now 8-2 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST, while Loyola is now 3-7 this season.
Junior Meghan O'Connell broke the 9-9 tie with a free-position goal at the 54:44 mark and freshman Allison Furstenburg added a scored just over a minute later. SU's defense was able to keep the Greyhounds out of the cage and SU used its passing game to control the final two minutes and secure the win for the Orange.
The Orange began the contest by using five different scorers to take a 5-0 advantage against Loyola in the first 12 minutes. The Greyhounds responded with five goals of their own, two off the stick of Maura Kenny and three from Kate McHarg, to tie the score, 5-5, and the half ended with the two teams tied.
Both teams were held scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second half, before the Orange struck for three goals in just over two minutes. Furstenburg, junior Melody Agnew and sophomore Jill DePetris all scored for the Orange. Loyola again evened the contest, 8-8, after three Greyhound goals.
Senior Courtney Palladino won the ensuing draw for the Orange and O'Connell put the ball in the net off the feed from Agnew as the Orange again took the lead, 9-8, at the 47:10 mark. Loyola tied the game for the third time when McHarg used a free-position shot to even the contest, 9-9, just 1:31 later.
Furstenburg and O'Connell each finished with hat-tricks, and junior Melody Agnew recorded three points in the game, as well, one goal and two assists.
Junior Jen Kasel played all 60 minutes in the cage for the Orange, making 11 saves. Palladino won five draws for Orange, helping to set up the Orange 29 shots.
Loyola was led by Kate McHarg's four goals. Kim Lawton played the first half of the game of the Greyhounds with seven saves, and Cindy Nicolaus played the second half, making four saves.
Syracuse goes on the road when it travels to No. 7 Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m.
