No. 12 Syracuse Loses 13-8 Decision to No. 7 Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. – The 12th-ranked Syracuse women’s lacrosse team (8-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) lost, 13-8, at No. 7 Dartmouth (10-0) on Tuesday, April 12 at Scully Fahey Field.
The Orange began the game by playing strong defense against the Big Green. Dartmouth won the opening draw and quickly moved the ball toward the Syracuse net, with Syracuse’s junior Jen Kasel making two saves in the opening two minutes of the contest. Both teams struggled with turnovers during the first five minutes of the game, but it was Syracuse that capitalized first junior Meghan O’Connell netting the game’s first goal 4:51 into the contest off a feed from sophomore Jill DePetris.
Dartmouth won the ensuing draw and Kasel again made the save for the Orange off the shot by Katieanna Christian. The Orange turned the ball over during the clear attempt, but senior Monica Joines caused Annie Leibovitz to cough the ball right back and O’Connell again found the back of the net, giving the Orange a 2-0 lead at 7:45.
Dartmouth then went on a 5-0 run during the next five minutes, taking a 5-2 advantage 13:35 into the game. Two of the Big Green’s goals were off free-position attempts. The Orange was able to answer with two goals of its own, a strike from DePetris off the feed from junior Evelyn Long at 14:37 and then Long found the back of the cage at the 16:07 mark. The half ended with a 4-0 scoring run for the Big Green, with Dartmouth having the 9-4 halftime lead.
The Orange began the second half with the first two tallied, bring the Orange to within three goals, 9-6. Dartmouth again testing Kasel in the half’s opening minutes, making the goalkeeper stop two Big Green free-position shots in the first minute of the half. Senior Courtney Palladino forced Andrea Smith to turn the ball over at 32:56, and Joines netted her first goal of the afternoon at 33:40, with the assist to O’Connell. Joines drew the foul, earning a free-position opportunity, and slipped it past Dartmouth’s Devon Wills at 40:19, cutting the lead to 9-6.
The Orange was able to cut the Dartmouth advantage to two, 10-8, with 11 minutes remaining in the game. After Dartmouth had a free-position goal by Kristin Zimmer, the Orange got tallies from freshman Allison Furstenburg at 46:10 and another free-position goal by Joines at the 49-minute mark. Syracuse was unable to find the back of the net during the next 11 minutes, and Dartmouth extended its lead to five goals, 13-8.
Joines, O’Connell and DePetris each added three points. Joines finished with a hat trick, while O’Connell had two goals, one assist, three ground ball and two forced turnovers and DePetris tallied one goal and added two assists. Kasel played all 60 minutes and tied her season-high with 12 saves.
Christian finished with five points for Dartmouth, all from goals. Whitney Douthett and Kristin Barry each scored three times for the Big Green. Wills made six saves, five in the second half for Dartmouth.
Dartmouth outshot the Orange 28-17, held a 28-13 advantage in ground balls and won the draw control battle, earning 14 draw wins to Syracuse’s 9.
Syracuse welcomes Boston College into the Carrier Dome on Saturday, April 16 at 1:00 p.m. The SU men’s lacrosse team will play Rutgers at 4:00 p.m. following the women’s game on Saturday.
