TILBURG, Netherlands - Syracuse defender Brad Peetoom helped the Canadian U-20 National Team to a 1-1 tie versus Syria in its first game of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship on Sunday, June 12. Peetoom started the game and played the first 88 minutes.
Syria jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second minute, but Canada was able to tally the equalizer in the 31st minute on a goal by Jamie Peters. Peetoom nearly provided the game winner in the 72nd minute, but his header off a corner kick was saved.
Canada will play two more matches versus teams in its group. It will face Colombia on Wednesday, June 15 and Italy on Saturday, June 18. The second stage (round of sixteen) of the tournament will begin on June 21.
Peetoom was named the Orange's Defensive MVP as a freshman in 2004. He was one of three players to start all 17 games and led the team in scoring with four goals. He was also a part of three SU shutouts.
Peetoom is the fourth SU player to appear for Canada at the world championship in the last three years. Alim Karim, Richard Asante and Frank Bruno were all part of the 2003 squad that advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in Canada's history.
