McNamara Named to 2005 USA World University Games Roster

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 3, 2005) -After training with 14 finalists since July 28, the official 12-man roster that will represent the United States at the World University Games in Izmir, Turkey, was announced by USA Basketball Wednesday morning. Syracuse senior guard Gerry McNamara was named to the team.

Of the 12 players selected to vie for a World University Games gold medal Aug. 12-22, four have previous USA Basketball experience, including Greg Brunner (Iowa / Charles City, Iowa); Chris Hernandez (Stanford / Fresno, Calif.); Craig Smith (Boston College / Los Angeles, Calif.) and Shelden Williams (Duke / Forrest Park, Okla.).

Players who made the final USA roster which, in addition to Brunner, Hernandez, Smith and Williams, include: Randy Foye(Villanova / Newark, N.J.); Mike Gansey (West Virginia / Olmsted Falls, Ohio); Vincent Grier (Minnesota / Charlotte, N.C.); Matt Haryasz (Stanford / Page, Ariz.); Eric Hicks (Cincinnati / Greensboro, N.C.); Bobby Jones (Washington / Compton, Calif.); Gerry McNamara (Syracuse / Scranton, Pa.); and Patrick Sparks(Kentucky / Central City, Ky.).

"This was a very tough decision," said USA World University Games head coach Jay Wright (Villanova University). "We have an entire team that has a great attitude and they all are very committed to their teammates and coaches. Making the cuts was extremely difficult and it just came down to numbers at each position."

The U.S. team will continue to train in Colorado Springs for the remainder of the week and will travel to Turkey on Friday, Aug. 5. The USA squad will then continue its training Aug. 7-10 in Izmir, before competition begins on Aug. 12.

Wright, who previously served as an assistant on the 2002 USA World Championship For Young Men Qualifying Team, is being assisted on the sidelines by collegiate head coaches Jeff Capel of Virginia Commonwealth University and Bobby Gonzalez of Manhattan College (N.Y.).
