DALLAS, Texas - Syracuse senior running back Damien Rhodes has been named a Doak Walker Award Candidate. The Doak Walker Award, given by the SMU Athletic Forum, is presented annually to the nation's best running back.
A 2004 second-team All-BIG EAST selection, Rhodes led the Orange with 153 carries, 870 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
Rhodes was also used as a kick returner in 2004. Last season, he gained a team-best 1,337 all-purpose yards. His 7.3 yards per all-purpose play tied him for 10th on the SU single-season list. Rhodes currently ranks seventh on the Orange’s all-time all-purpose yards per game list (100.2) and eighth on the SU career all-purpose yards per play list (6.9). His 810 career kick return yards are the ninth-highest total by an SU player.
Rhodes is one of four BIG EAST players on the list. Brian Leonard from Rutgers, Cornell Brockington from Connecticut, and Michael Bush from Louisville have also been names as candidates.
Rhodes is also a member of the Maxwell Award Watch List, presented annually to the Collegiate Player of the Year.
The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on Nov. 17, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote for finalists on Nov. 18. The committee will then vote for the winner on Nov. 28.
The announcement of the Doak Walker Award will be aired live on ESPN on Dec. 8. The award is the only major collegiate award that requires candidates to be in good academic standing and on time to graduate.
