Women's Soccer Finishes New Mexico Classic With 3-0 Loss

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The Orange lost its final game at the New Mexico Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. to New Mexico, 3-0, Sunday. New Mexico’s Kristine Sweat led the way with two goals. Nikki Spartano (Syracuse, N.Y./Nottingham) led SU with two of the team’s eight shots.
Sweat scored the games first goal in the 11th minute when she lofted a shot from 30 yards out over Emily Kowalczyk’s (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville) head. The Lobos held a 1-0 lead into the intermission.
Both teams went scoreless to open the second half until Kaela Kelly added to the New Mexico lead when she headed a cross pass from Katelyn Ley into the goal opening up a 2-0 lead in the 77th minute. In the 81st minute, Sweat scored her second goal of the day as the Lobos pulled away, 3-0.
SU was out shot 14-8, while holding a slight 5-4 lead in corner kick opportunities.
Kaitlin LaMothe (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional) was named to the All-Classic team for her performance in the Orange’s two games this weekend. In Friday’s loss to Arizona State, LaMothe scored her first career goal off an Amanda Arcuri (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown) assist.
The Orange will next be in action on Saturday when it opens BIG EAST play at St. John’s at 3 p.m.
