AUGUSTA, Ga. – Syracuse junior punter Brendan Carney has been named to the 2005 Ray Guy Award Watch List, presented annually to the nation’s best collegiate punter. Last season, Carney was a second-team All-BIG EAST selection.
Carney owns freshman punting records for punts (60), punting yards (2,581), and punting average (43.0). In 2004, Carney averaged 42.8 yards, the sixth-highest single season average in SU history.
Only one other BIG EAST punter is on the watch list, and that is Pittsburgh's Adam Graessle.
The Ray Guy Award recipient is determined by a national selection committee of sports writers, coaches, sports information directors, former punters, and members designated by the Greater Augusta Sports Council. The statistics used to determine the winner include: total yardage, number of times a punt is downed or kicked out of bounds inside the opponent’s 20-yard line, net average, average returned yardage, and percentage of punts not returned.
The watch list will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists which will be announced in early November. The committee will then vote for the top three finalists which will be announced at the end of November. The winner will be announced live on ESPN on Dec. 8 at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
