SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The SU men’s soccer team (4-0-0) will look to stay unbeaten when it opens BIG EAST play on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. versus Marquette (3-1-0) at the SU Soccer Stadium. The match represents the first BIG EAST contest for the Marquette, which is in its first year in the league.
The Orange is off to its best start since 1986 when it began the campaign with four straight victories. The team’s best ever start to a season came in 1984 when SU opened the year 7-0 on its way to its only NCAA Tournament appearance.
Goals could be at a premium on Friday night if the first two weeks of the season are any indication. SU, ranked third in the most recent NSCAA/adidas New York region rankings, has allowed just one goal in its first four outings. Likewise for the Golden Eagles, who have only given up one tally and both squads are tied for fifth in the nation in shutout percentage at 0.75, blanking three of their first four opponents.
Syracuse freshman keeper Robert Cavicchia’s shutout streak remains intact. He hasn’t allowed a goal in 336 minutes of action and is 4-0 with three blankings. Cavicchia leads SU with 14 saves and stopped a personal-best eight shots against Cornell on Sept. 7. Marquette keepers Steven Grow and Andy Kroll have each played 180 minutes in net for the Golden Eagles and have combined for 10 saves and three shutouts.
The Orange has outscored its opponents 6-1 this season. Redshirt freshman Pete Rowley is the squad’s top scorer with two goals, including the game-winner versus Adelphi on Sept. 11. Sophomore Isaac Collings (one goal, two assists) also has four points.
After losing to #18 Ohio State, 1-0, in its season-opener, Marquette reeled off 1-0 wins versus Penn State, Drake, and St. Francis (Pa.) to improve its record to 3-1-0. Pat Knoelke, Richie Harris, and Duncan Silvert-Noftle have each scored once for the Golden Eagles and Marquette enters Friday’s match ranked 10th in the NSCAA/adidas Great Lakes regional poll.
Syracuse and Marquette have met on another occasion in the 85-year history of the SU men’s soccer program. The Orange defeated the Golden Eagles, 3-0, in the 1989 season-opener.
There is no charge for admission to SU men’s soccer contests. Gates to the SU Soccer Stadium open an hour prior to the match.
