Women's Tennis Hits the Courts at Yale Invite

NEW HAVEN, CONN.- Syracuse opened its season Saturday as it took part in the Yale Invitational getting four wins in singles play. Orange players that advanced in singles play are Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia), Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario/Northview Heights), Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Wei-Ming Leong (Ipoh, Malaysia).
In the Flight A singles bracket, Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) came in as the number three seed, however was ousted in the opening round by Yale’s Janet Kim, 6-2, 7-5. Also competing in Flight A was Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy) who lost in the first round to Yale’s Christina Cutter 10-7 in a tie-breaker for the third set, losing 7-5, 1-6, (10-7).
In Flight B singles play, Syracuse’s Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Calif./Menlo) lost in three sets to Aimee Kim from Yale, 4-6, 6-4, (10-1). Vasilyeva won her first collegiate match beating Marlena Hall of Columbia, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Orange picked up a pair of victories in the Flight C singles draw, with Huignard beating Karolina Grygierowska from Yale, 6-0, 6-3. Bramante joins Huignard in the quarterfinals after beating Stony Brook’s Victoria Vovsha, 6-0, 6-1.
Leong, the lone Orange entry in the Flight D singles draw, cruised into the semifinals winning 6-0, 6-0 over Columbia’s Linnai Goswami.
SU had one doubles pairing in action today with Bramante and Leong losing in the Flight A doubles to Yale’s Rashmee Patil and Olivia Nix, 9-8(3). Vaynberg and Zawadzki are the number one seeds in Flight A and received a first round bye.
