NEW HAVEN, CONN- The Orange started its season on a good note this weekend capturing titles in four of the six main draw brackets played at the Yale Invitational in New Haven, Conn. SU swept the doubles draws with Victoria Vaynberg (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) and Catherine Zawadzki (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) winning the Flight A title while Ashley Lipton (Saratoga, Fl./Menlo) and Carolina Huignard (Don Mills, Ontario/Northview Heights) won an all Syracuse final to take Flight B. Katie Bramante (Endwell, N.Y./Union-Endicott) and Wei-Ming Leong ( Ipoh, Malaysia) each captured singles titles winning flights C and D, respectively.
In the Flight A doubles semifinals the duo of Vaynberg and Zawadzki picked up a routine 8-2 win over Aimee Kim and Janet Kim of Yale. In the final, Vaynberg and Zawadzki cruised to an 8-3 victory against Columbia’s Milena Kachar and Kara Worsley.
The Orange saw two teams through to the finals of the Flight B doubles draw after the team of Lipton and Huignard picked up an 8-5 victory over Yale’s Christine Alford and Karolina Grygierowska. On the bottom half of the draw, the pairing of Maria Vasilyeva (St. Petersburg, Russia) and Jessica Juricek (Zagreb, Croatia) cruised to an 8-2 victory against Dartmouth’s Katie Jaxheimer and Danielle Murray, setting up the all-Syracuse final. In the championship, Lipton and Huignard picked up an 8-3 win.
Bramante was able to pull through two highly competitive sets in the Flight C final. Columbia’s Nina Suda was able to keep the match close, however Bramante would prove to be too much to handle as she won the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Leong captured the Orange’s second singles crown of the weekend claiming Flight D, beating Jamie Caplan of Dartmouth in the final, 7-6, 6-2. Leong picked up three victories en route to her title this weekend moving her to within two wins of joining the century club at SU. Leong, a senior, has 98 total wins in her career. She is looking to be the 24th SU tennis player to reach the 100-win milestone, seventh under head coach Mac Gifford.
Syracuse will next be in action Sept. 30-Oct 2 when it travels to Wake Forest University to take part in the Deacon Classic.
