
Orange Fall to No. 3 UNC in ACC Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Syracuse University women's tennis team couldn't overcome an early deficit, falling 4-0 to No. 3 North Carolina at the Chewning Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The Orange (4-4) were unable to match a strong doubles performance from UNC. Thea Rabman and Reese Brantmeier saw off a comeback effort from Serafima Shastova and Monika Wojcik to triumph 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Anastasia Sysoeva and Nelly Knezkova battled back from a three-point deficit but could not complete the comeback as Tatum Evans and Oby Kajuru won 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, Susanna Maltby and Claire Hill defeated Leena Bennetto and Constance Levivier 6-4.
In singles action, Knezkova squared off with the No. 7 ranked singles player in the nation in Kajuru. Knezkova led early, but Kajuru went on to win 6-3, 6-2. Brantmeier, the top ranked singles player in the nation, knocked off Shastova 6-3, 6-1, and No. 21 Tatum Evans claimed the winning point for the Tar Heels, defeating Sysoeva 6-2, 6-1. Bennetto rallied after losing the first set to force a third set with Hill, but the match went unfinished.
Syracuse closes out its North Carolina road trip on Sunday, facing Duke at noon. The match will take place at the Ambler Tennis Stadium.
