
Field Hockey Loses 4-0 Decision to Pacific

BERKELEY, CALIF. -- Jennifer Chaney scored the first of her game-high two goals just 5:20 into the contest and Pacific never looked back as the Tigers defeated visiting Syracuse, 4-0, in an NCAA field hockey game played at California's Maxwell Field. It was the third game of the season for Pacific, who improved its season record to 2-1. For the Orange, it marked the team's 2005 season opener.
SU (0-1) will remain out west to take on Stanford on Sunday, Sept. 4, at 11 a.m. PT. Head coach Kathleen Parker's squad will face Cal on Monday, Sept,. 5 at 1 p.m. PT.
Chaney had a hand in all four goals. On the goals she did not score, she had assists.
Pacific built a 3-0 lead by halftime. Erica Nestle tallied the game's second goal at the 12:32 mark off an assist from Chaney. Then, Laura Maurer finished off a Chaney pass at 27:35.
It took Chaney eight minutes into the second half to post her second goal of the game. This one was unassisted and gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead it would never relinquish.
Pacific outshot Syracuse, 18-6, for the game. The Tigers held a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Marie O'Brien (Burlington, Ontario) made her second career start in goal for the Orange (her first start came in last year's BIG EAST semifinal against Boston College). O'Brien tallied two saves in the first half of play. She shared goalkeeping duties with freshman Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa./Warwick), who played the entire second half and recorded six saves. Hess faced 10 second-half shots, but allowed just one goal. Tiger goalkeeper Valerie Niles finished with three saves.
