SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball head coach Mary Jo Firnbach released the 2006 Orange softball schedule on Tuesday, Sept. 20. This upcoming season’s slate features matchups with at least seven teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Division I Softball Championship, including a doubleheader with conference newcomer DePaul, which reached the 2005 NCAA Super Regionals.
In addition to hosting the Blue Demons on April 9, the Orange will square off against NCAA Championship participants Seton Hall (March 25), Canisius (April 25) Notre Dame (April 8) and Hofstra (April 13) at the SU Softball Stadium. Syracuse will meet NCAA Championship qualifiers Louisville (April 21) and South Florida (April 23) on the road.
The Orange open the 2006 campaign with an appearance at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament in Tempe Ariz. from Feb. 10-12. SU will compete in the Middle Tennessee Tournament (Feb. 24-26) two weeks later, as well as the Georgia Tech Tournament (March 3-5), the Long Beach State Tournament (March 10-12) and the Sacramento State Tournament (March 17-19) before beginning its BIG EAST schedule.
Firnbach’s charges begin conference play by hosting Seton Hall and will welcome St. John’s to the SU Softball Stadium the following day (March 26) for a doubleheader. The next weekend the Orange will visit Villanova (April 1) and Rutgers (April 2) for a pair of twin bills before traveling to Binghamton for two games against the Bearcats on April 4.
After hosting the Fighting Irish and De Paul, SU will step out of conference again, hosting a doubleheader versus Niagara (April 12). Hofstra comes to town the following day and the Orange host Pittsburgh on April 15. SU hits the road for doubleheaders versus Louisville and South Florida before wrapping up the regular season with home dates versus Canisius, Connecticut (April 28), Providence (April 30) and Buffalo (May 3).
The top eight teams in the BIG EAST this season will qualify for the league championship, which gets underway on May 11 and will be hosted by Notre Dame.
The Orange set a team record for victories last year with 28 and finished with an overall record of 28-22 in 2004. SU defeated Villanova in the 2004 BIG EAST Championship for its first-ever postseason triumph.
